Alleged spy called pitiable alcoholic by defense doctors
SYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE Fla A1Sgt Walter Perkins accused of possessing secret documents and seeking to smuggle them to Soviet agents was described by three defense psychiatrists as a pitiable alcoholic on the edge of mental collapse. They said decades of drinking impaired his faculties though he had rehabilitated in 10 months of confinement and could return to duty with treatment. The prosecution plans to call Air Force Alcoholism Center psychiatrists to argue responsibility. Perkins, 37, was arrested October 18 at an airport with a map and meeting instructions for Russian agents. The defense contends alcohol deterioration, not intent, caused his acts. He had started drinking before enlisting at 17, consuming a fifth daily for years.
