Shaftsbury residents crowded Cole Hall to resolve fiscal woes and approve a new town government model. The town will hire a town manager, add two selectmen, and levy a 2 special tax on the Grand List to raise 24000 for debt relief.
Cooperstown New York Bassett Hospital officials urge owners of large cars to stop parking in compact car spaces in the hospital lot. The request aims to prevent space misuse and improve patient access at the facility.
About 15 mourners invited to final rites for Marilyn Monroe at the Chapel of the Palms in Westwood. Police and guards prepared for a potential mob as thousands could gather, while officials described a 35 minute non denominational service led by Rev A J Soldan and a bronze casket entombment to follow.

The measure, supported in the House 3-1, would create a interim commission to study reapportionment and report before the 1962 elections, with adjournment possible if approved.
Elizabeth Ann Duncan, 58, is to die in San Quentin's gas chamber for hiring two men to murder her son's wife Olga Duncan in 1958. Augustin Baldonado, 28, and Luis Moya, 23, will follow three hours later. Frank Duncan and S Ward Sullivan sought delays but the U.S. Supreme Court and California Supreme Court denied appeals.
