Consolidation Seen as Common Sense by Town Counsel
Bennington Town Counsel Nor ton Barber urged consolidation of the six mile Bennington area at a Jaycees meeting. He blamed separate town village systems for planning and service problems and argued a town government would be simpler, more voter responsive, and easier to plan for. He warned about dual tax and legal exposure and urged practical, gradual consolidation with further expert views to follow.

Village considers water meter for Walloomsac Inn
Walter Berry, owner of the Walloomsac Inn in Old Bennington, seeks a water meter at the service entrance to base his annual bill on per faucets. Commissioners say they would likely grant a meter request, but install costs and the inn’s half-year closure complicate income recovery. The board notes complex lines to the hotel and that separate two inch meters would cost more, while a four inch meter would not pay back quickly. The town’s sanitation charges and village rate structure for non village residents add to the dispute as the village resists altering rates for secondary uses.
