Pownal church plans and town meeting schedule
The Pownal Baptist Church choir rehearses tonight at 6 30 at the church and the weekly prayer meeting is Wednesday at 7 30 p m. The Board of Selectmen meets Thursday at 5 p m at the town office. Fire departments and auxiliaries attended the Vermont State Fire Fighters Convention in Cambridge last weekend with many local members named. Mrs. Bishop was re elected treasurer and Mrs. Knapp second vice president of the state auxiliary. The Pownal auxiliary won a trophy for traveling miles. East Pownal won the state achievement award. Pownal earned a trophy for the best appearing hand drawn antique hose cart.

Manchester to adopt a sewer ordinance tonight
Manchester selectmen last night debated a 29 page sewer ordinance as part of planning for a new town village system. After minor changes they agreed to adopt it tonight after site visits and consulting Jennison Engineering. The ordinance will be posted townwide for 60 days before going into effect.

David R. Martin is appointed Director of Guidance Services at Burr and Burton Seminary effective August 1. A native of St Johnsbury he studied at the University of Montreal earning a 1962 degree and two masters degrees in sacred theology and counseling. He previously counseled at Champlain Valley Union High School and worked with youth in Vermont Catholic parishes. His wife Virginia will join as English instructor and learning consultant. The Martins will live in Pawlet and Martin will be on site daily 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to meet with students and parents before the September 3 opening.

The Shaftsbury school board, after interviewing four teachers, hired three new teachers Catherine Thomas Kay Bartholomew and Edward Bianchi all first time in the profession. One week earlier a fourth grade vacancy was expected while Thad Hanus resigned and Ann Friedman took a leave to teach at the Vermont Achievement Center in Rutland. The board also hired three lunch program workers Julie Bow Mary Ann Greene and Louise Beaupre with Beaupre working three hours daily and the others about six hours.
