In Tampa a jury acquits former Florida Senator Edward Gurney after a 164 day trial. The judge rules insufficient evidence for first degree murder, which carries a mandatory death sentence in North Carolina. Jurors reconsideration possible on related charges.
The Hoffa family said their adoptive brother Charles O'Brien has not contacted them for over six months. James Hoffa Jr demanded a lie detector test, while Barbara Crancer noted O'Brien has not been seen since Thanksgiving and hinted at possible knowledge of the missing Teamsters leader. O'Brien met FBI and police for three hours but left without comment, amid speculation of his role and ties to Hoffa’s disappearance.
Former U S senator Edward Gurney and his aides were acquitted of most charges after a 164 day trial in Tampa Florida. Jurors deadlocked on conspiracy and lying to a grand jury counts. Co defendants and government officials were mixed in reactions as mistrial declared on unresolved counts.
Five Japanese Red Army terrorists and five comrades freed the last 15 hostages and departed Kuala Lumpur aboard a DC8 bound for Colombo and Aden before reaching Tripoli, ending an 80 hour takeover that began with the assault on the U S Embassy. The release included U S Consul General Robert Stebbins and others.
In Washington on Hiroshima anniversary Premier Takeo Miki and President Ford agreed to cooperate on preventing nuclear weapons spread. They noted the 30th anniversary of the bomb and urged restraint, with a joint communique calling for constructive nuclear arms limits and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The Bennington Planning Commission agreed to two public hearings for four zoning changes at the request of the selectmen. A tie vote moved to revert Route 67A south land from RC 40 to VR 2, despite opposition. A possible CS 40 extension near Mammoth Mart was discussed as pressures shift with a used car plan and a new town plan limiting commercial districts. Public hearings scheduled for Sept. 3, then a second with the selectmen after 30 days.
Governor Salmon led a ceremonial closing of Windsor State Prison marking Vermont’s shift to community based corrections. He recalled the 1809 founding, noted a 1966 move to community centers, and praised Windsor as an emblem of reform. Vermont becomes first state to eliminate in-state maximum security capability.
Tracy Howard of Brattleboro seeks a vacant state House seat after losing in a GOP primary. Norman Chase leads the local committee with 24 votes to 13. Governor Salmon will consult before any appointment, not bound to town committee nominations. Rep. Buraczynski backs Howard amid the process.
