Aiken Predicts Inexpensive Artificial Kidney Will Save Many Lives
Senator George D. Aiken announced that Atomic Energy Commission scientists have developed a portable artificial kidney costing under $100. He cited hopes for mass production to lower costs, expand home use, and save thousands of lives, with tests ongoing at Argonne and Hines VA Hospital. He noted 8,000 annual deaths expected from kidney disease without such machines and urged increased federal funding for kidney research.
