Eleven Die in Fire at Downtown Minneapolis Complex
A downtown Minneapolis fire killed eleven people and left four hospitalized with seven missing. The blaze began at 12:54 am on a wooden rear porch, damaged a three story brick-veneer building on East Hennepin Avenue. Fire Chief Kenneth Hall said 32 residents were inside when it started. top floors were hardest hit. Nine escaped, some climbing from windows or using ropes. Names of the deceased were not released. several shops on the second floor including Don Leary's TV and Record Shop and Hennepin Loan Co. were damaged. The fire caused about $150,000 in damages and was under control about two hours later.
