NASA announced the sixth class of astronauts, naming 11 civilians ages 25 to 40. The group includes the first two foreign born American spacemen, the oldest and youngest ever named, all with doctoral degrees. The corps rises to 57 as NASA expands its science focus.
President Johnson named Assistant Defense Secretary Paul R. Ignatius as Secretary of the Navy to fill the vacancy caused by John McNaughton's death in a July air collision near Hendersonville North Carolina. Ignatius, 46, a Los Angeles native, will succeed Paul H. Nitze who becomes deputy defense secretary on July 1. He has held Pentagon roles since 1961 and previously worked in the Army and Harvard Business School paths. NASA also announced ten new astronauts including Dr Joseph P Allen and Dr Philip K Chapman with assignments slated for Houston and Cambridge.
Washington based reporters report a poverty official denied before Senate investigators that federal funds financed a Tennessee school accused of promoting hate. The testimony followed claims that anti poverty workers helped stir unrest in Newark, with Rev J Paschall Davis denying misuse of federal money.
Bijur Lubricating faces a potential delay in plans for a new 50 000 to 60 000 square foot plant on the 29 acre site northwest of Park Street Lovers Lane in Bennington. President William Durnan, during a two day local visit, cited a 30 percent tax rise as a key factor and noted the need to reassess timing while emphasizing the company has a 21 year Bennington operation and an outmoded plant. Durnan met with local officials and business leaders including Francis J. Hogan Norman Greenberg and Wilbur Rice, and said the Globe Union strike does not affect Bijur.
Arab foreign ministers in Khartoum agreed to recommend a summit of heads of state in Sudan to end the Yemeni civil war. Egypt and Saudi Arabia reportedly ready to end the conflict, with a date likely by August 25 per Middle East News Agency. The ministers did not set a strategy to remove Israeli troops or finalize Western boycott plans.
American jet bombers conducted heavy raids in North Vietnam, attacking antiaircraft sites, rail hubs, and military barracks near Haiphong and Hanoi. Up to 900 jets took part in Friday strikes, widening the heaviest one day aerial assault of the war.
A Friday assault on Wichita Kansas police headquarters erupted into a rare racially charged incident. About 75 to 100 Black residents stormed the building, damaged property, and demanded the release of a Black man accused of attacking a pregnant woman and two white men. Sheriff Vern Miller was pellet wounded chasing suspects as officers repelled the crowd and later protected the county courthouse.
