Washington reports President Johnson failed to stop a steel price hike as U S Steel joined Inland Steel and five others in boosting sheet prices by $3 a ton. The move likely boosts inflation signals with autos appliances and related goods affected while White House advisers urged restraint.
U S Steel Corp the nations largest steelmaker joined five other major producers in lifting steel sheet prices by three dollars a ton effective August 10. The move boosts industrywide gains to about 87 million dollars annually and may raise prices on autos and appliances. Worthington cited higher labor costs under the USW contract and said users would not be significantly affected. Other brands National Steel and Pittsburgh Steel also announced the rise.
