Private pension overhaul eyed for 1972 Congress action
Washington observers say major pension legislation unlikely this year but possible in 1972. Senate subcommittee hearings on withheld pensions, a 1300-plan study, and a White House task force push the issue, with vesting rules and fiduciary reforms at the center of debate.

Desert irrigation breakthrough brings green to Negev fields
Israeli scientist Dr. Michael Evenari uses Nabatean catchment reservoirs to channel three inches of annual rainfall into crops in the Negev. He grows apricots, peaches, nuts and vegetables with minimized water use and aims to share the method with India, Pakistan, and Arab states. Bedouin nomads already test the system, promising higher grazing capacity with little labor and a one time under twenty dollar per acre investment.

Russo jailed for refusing to testify about Ellsberg
Anthony J. Russo, ally of Daniel Ellsberg, was ordered jailed for contempt after refusing to answer questions before a federal grand jury in the Pentagon papers case. The panel of appeals judges upheld the contempt and set an indefinite term, with Russo having immunity. Ellsberg faces charges for unauthorized possession and theft of the Pentagon study. Russo, a Rand Corp. employee in Santa Monica, urged noncooperation and called Ellsberg courageous and patriotic.
