Alternate care pilot to cut Vermont nursing home costs
The Vermont Social Welfare Department will launch a three year pilot called alternate care funded by a $42 000 federal grant to reduce state nursing home admissions by providing alternatives. The plan targets a current monthly expense over 300 000 and uses about 1 200 of Vermont 2 000 nursing home beds. In Montpelier Deputy Welfare Commissioner Paul Philbrook emphasized the project aims to prove the residency issue is driven by lack of suitable alternatives. The initiative starts this month and focuses on lowering costs while freeing beds.
