Passengers recall Logan DC-10 fire scare

At Logan International Airport Massachusetts, an American Airlines DC10 bound for Los Angeles caught fire in its rear engine after a mid day takeoff. Passengers and crew evacuated via 30 foot escape chutes with 46 injured slightly and four hospitalized. Maryann Perry led her sons to safety amid smoke and screams as foam doused the engine. Guardian angels and calm reactions helped prevent panic despite the dramatic event.

Water conservation urged as drought risk grows in Massachusetts

Massachusetts Environmental Affairs Secretary Evelyn Murphy told a national policy hearing that federal water policy must emphasize conservation and funding for water and energy saving devices. She warned of rising water prices, possible fivefold increases, and urged state and federal actions to curb demand while studying ground water and stream needs. Massachusetts House Leader McLean proposed sewage districts in New England to protect drinking water supplies with a state intervention timetable if towns fail to comply.
