Gov. Philip Hoff announced the cancellation of the special legislative session planned for Monday after meetings with legislative leaders and aides. He said proceeding would be futile if priority issues had little chance of action.
The International Brotherhood of Telephone Workers strike continues in Bennington for a fourth day. Pickets remain on duty around the clock as operators refuse to cross lines and service is kept by supervisory staff. Long distance and local calls show delays, no installation work is done, only emergencies are repaired, and a Boston meeting with a federal mediator is planned. Hoff criticizes state leadership and suggests a possible one day special session to address the Pavilion Hotel issue if agreement is reached.

About 1,000 police moved onto Columbia University and forcibly removed hundreds of protesters from five seized buildings. Police reported 628 arrests, mainly for trespassing, with 76 treated at St Luke's Hospital and many others at campus facilities.
Washington dispatch reports that the draft system remains largely unchanged as Selective Service Director Hershey says most reform proposals from the National Advisory Commission on Selective Service were rejected. The Johnson‑appointed task force, with McNamara and Schultze, completed its review on Oct 16, 1967, but Congress had already rejected most proposals in 1967.
The Rev Frederick B Wolf rector of St. Peters Episcopal Church Bennington was named Monday to the State Housing Authority by Gov Philip Hoff. Appointees include Robert E Clark Es sex Junction Henry Walker Orleans John Mulligan Hydeville and Sheldon Dimick Randolph. The authority will run federally subsidized low income housing leasing programs and oversee updated records and regional offices.
UPI reports Secret Service agents arrested three Texans near Tucson for melting pre-1965 silver dimes and quarters, seizing $79,000 in coins and bars. The trio Ralph WwW. Swafford 48 Dan Skanovsky 53 Hector M. Carrasco 40 were arraigned and held on $2,500 bonds each with preliminary hearing set May 6.
Rev. Ralph Abernathy led the poor people's crusade to Capitol Hill urging Congress to create a minimum of 2 million new jobs for the hard core unemployed. He pressed for 1 million jobs immediately and another million over four years, noting widespread unemployment despite national wealth.
