Nixon Reviews Edited Tapes As Deadline Near

President Nixon's lawyers supplied edited transcripts of 36 subpoenaed Watergate tapes to review before turning them over to Rep. Rodino's Judiciary Committee by Tuesday morning. Six tapes are missing or unrecorded. officials say Nixon plans to provide transcripts only, which Rodino says would be unacceptable. A White Paper and possible broadcast address are anticipated as the deadline approaches. Nixon left for Camp David with Pat and Tricia to study the transcripts.

UPI reports US District Judge Gerhard Gesell denied Dwight L. Chapin's motions for a new trial or acquittal after Chapin was found guilty of two counts of making false statements to the grand jury about dirty tricks in the 1972 campaign. The judge defended the jury and noted overwhelming proof of intent. trial in Washington drew a packed courtroom and ongoing interest as related charges against Mitchell and Stans proceeded.

Waterbury security tightened after three escapes

Vermont officials from the Departments of Mental Health and Corrections unveiled plans to bolster security at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury after three inmates escaped from the maximum security wing. The proposals include joint reviews of procedures, Windsor prison training for staff, and criteria for admission and discharge, with cross training and mutual case planning to be developed by supervisory personnel. Waterbury selectmen urged Gov. Salmon to address the ongoing trouble following the latest escape.

CVPS curtails 1974 construction amid rate fight

Central Vermont Public Service Corp plans to scale back its capital program from 5.3 million to 3.5 million due to delays in securing higher rates. Dorset botanist at 95 finds rewards of research

Alfred Holly Gilbert of Dorset, age 95, remains active as a botanist and plant pathologist. He began studying potato diseases in 1923 and, decades later, his observations foreshadowed a viroid-related finding. Gilbert’s work highlighted the spindling-tuber disease with distinct vine and tuber symptoms, predating wider identification by other scientists.
