Emissions tests flag few cars as heavy pollutants
A Champion Spark Plug Co test of 5,666 cars at 27 sites in the United States and Canada finds that a small minority cause most tailpipe pollution and fuel waste. Many cars are undermaintained, and regular tuneups can cut emissions and boost fuel economy, with New Jersey's inspection program showing tangible air and fuel gains.
