Route 7 improvements loom for Troy to Bennington

New York State has begun pre survey and soil testing for Route 7 upgrades between Troy and the Vermont border at Bennington. About 40 engineers work on surveying, designs, and an environmental impact statement as planners outline widening to 12 foot lanes with 10 foot shoulders, straightening curves, and added passing lanes to cut run off the road accidents. The project timeline remains uncertain with estimates ranging years and no firm construction date.

Bennington panel endorses reapportionment plan to create Pownal seat

The Bennington Board of Civil Authority backed a reapportionment plan Monday that gives Pownal its own representative while preserving most Subdistrict 31 and 33 boundaries. The plan moves Rep. Thomas Haley Jr. to Subdistrict 3-3 and shifts candidate Craig Sweet from 3-2 to 33. It will go to a joint committee Thursday before state approval and introduces a county based district labeling system.

Lake Shaftsbury to become Vermont state park this summer

Lake Shaftsbury area will be operated as a Vermont state park with a formal closing set for Thursday in attorney Robert E. Cummings Jr. office. A May 4 ceremony with Gov. Salmon will mark the purchase of about 100 acres for roughly $300,000 funded by state recreation funds.

PanAm jet crashes on Bali with 107 aboard

Pan American World Airways jetliner crashed into jungle mountainside on Bali island with 107 people aboard. By nightfall rescue teams reported no survivors within reach, after 15 hours of difficult terrain search. Among the dead were 26 Americans including Hilton Hotel executive Maurice Reymond of New York City.

Supreme Court dodges racial quota issue in high court ruling

The Supreme Court split five to four sidestepping the racial quota matter in the DeFunis case. A white law student claimed the University of Washington discriminated against him with minority admissions. The decision sent the dispute back to Washington State Supreme Court noting the student would finish his studies regardless of the court’s merits. Justice Brennan and three other dissenters warned the issue would return to federal courts.

MAU board moves to shape fair books policy

Mt Anthony Union High School board met to craft a controversial policy on the right to read and parental screening of books. The April 8 incident when a parent confiscated and threatened to burn Go Ask Alice prompted focus on guidelines.
