Europeans launch satellite for magnetospheric study
A European satellite named Geos, built for the European Space Agency by firms from Belgium through the United Kingdom, will be launched by a NASA Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral to study Earth's magnetosphere. The 22 300 mile high orbit will keep the craft stationary relative to Earth's rotation, aiding analysis of solar wind interactions. NASA will be reimbursed 14.3 million dollars in launch costs.
