GNP rises 5.2 percent strongest in a year

The Commerce Department reported first quarter GNP rose 5.2 percent after inflation to 1.297 trillion dollars, the strongest since early 1976, aided by higher consumer spending. Weather and inflation improved despite a sharp wholesale price rise, with personal income up 24 billion dollars in March.

Re-enactment plans loom for Bennington Battle event

Bennington selectmen struck a temporary settlement with a major debtor and discussed a large scale Battle of Bennington re enactment slated for August 13 at Willow Park. Hoosick Falls teachers win 7 percent raise contract

Hoosick Falls Central School teachers and administrators will receive an average 7 percent raise next year under a board approved contract. The 7 percent includes a 4 percent increase beyond step raises. Board vote was 6 to 1, Benedict Niles dissenting.

Moulton urges growth through hard work for Vermont economy

Elbert Al Moulton Vermont's new commissioner of economic development told Bennington Chamber attendees that growth requires hard work not slogans. He cited Gov Snelling's goal of 10 000 new jobs in two years and urged statewide job creation across recreation manufacturing and agriculture. He discussed Vermont Canada ties and a dual plan to reach the job target, with a business doctor to assist firms.
