U.S and Greece map a defense pact step by step
Washington reports that the United States and Greece aim to draft a comprehensive defense cooperation agreement for Congress within four to six weeks. Greek Premier Constantine Caramanlis hailed the interim accord as easing Eastern Mediterranean risk, while Rep. John Brademas opposed both this and Turkey’s separate deal. The plan includes Greece hosting U.S. bases with Greek leadership of up to 50 percent of personnel, shared intelligence, and Greece receiving 700 million dollars in military aid over four years. Ford and Bitsios discussed Cyprus and security in a positive White House briefing.
