Outside Town residents challenge merger benefits
Bennington's Unification Study Committee faced hostile questions from 38 Outside Town residents at a Molly Stark School hearing about merging three village units and one fire district. The crowd pressed for police, water, zoning, and tax impacts, while officials argued for state police cooperation and preemptive patrols and noted water service would come with a 65 cent exemption for those not yet entitled to village water.

About 120 Shaftsbury landowners gathered in Cole Hall to oppose the Highway Department’s relocated four-lane U.S. 7 proposal, weighing the department plan against Arlington architect Philip Linde’s eastern relocation. The meeting reviewed both routes, with critics warning the current line would destroy prime land and favoring long-term planning and potential traffic shifts.
