Harrington votes no on Bennington Program continuation
Lawrence E. Harrington of Woodford criticized the continued Bennington Program at Mt. Anthony Union High School, arguing it fails to offer the courses required for a state-sanctioned high school diploma. He called the GED inadequate and pressed that funds support a diploma track in the regular high school system, noting the program costs about $133 per pupil less than the structured high school.

Selectmen OK survey to extend sewer line on Dewey Street Ext
Bennington Selectmen last night authorized a 1,30-foot engineering survey for a 20,000 sewer extension on Dewey Street Extension. The project would relieve drainage for homes beyond the existing mains near Putnam Memorial Hospital. Council member Charles E. Dewey III backs the eight-unit complex planned along the road between the future nursing home and Monument Avenue Extension. The cost would be shared two thirds by abutting property owners and one third by the town under a policy tied to a charter change allowing assessments for benefiting municipal improvements. Philip J. O’Neil voiced health concerns as sewage surfaces in his driveway and offered to fund the study, but the town will cover it. The board also announced a future newspaper notice for equipment purchases and discussed removing a hedge at 114 Observatory St. to ease traffic hazards.
