Firemen Busy Day With Mutual Aid Drill and Grass Fire

Rural firefighters spent Sunday in a three hour mutual aid drill on an old house site on Park Street Extension before responding to a 4:30 p.m. grass fire on Mt Anthony north slope started by boys. The blaze spread east and uphill toward the woods, snow stopping its progress. Chief Norman Turgeon noted luck due to remaining snow. Later a 9:15 p.m. call addressed a burning tree near the Darling Kelly Motel on U.S. 7 caused by shorted lines. Central Vermont Public Service crews fixed the outage. The day also included two automobile accidents and a fatal one in New York, with multiple victims and hospitalizations, prompting local police reports and funeral arrangements.

Stafford Prepares Tax Break On Education Expenses

Congress man Robert T. Stafford of Vermont introduced a revised bill for a 30 percent education expense tax credit up to 450 dollars against federal income tax for higher education or occupational training. He argues education costs rise, prices climb, and a credit helps families meet costs without handouts while boosting skilled labor. A separate note mentions a Dollars for Scholars meeting in Bennington and a Bennington Rural Volunteer Fire Department officers election.
