Deer Biologist Blasts Lawmakers on Herd Control
Burlington Vermont deer biologist Ben Day warned lawmakers that the deer herd faces critical food shortages. He said the southern herd shows smaller size and shorter antlers, with reduced reproductive rates, and warned the population could collapse if not managed. Day criticized the Legislature for resisting transfer of deer control to the Fish and Game Department, citing lack of biological knowledge and poor communication with sportsmen. He noted about 80 000 fawns are born yearly and many die within 18 months, with thousands starving during harsh winters.
