Region's Economy Marked By Expanding Employment
The New England region shows stronger overall performance than the nation amid a slack national economy. In early 1967 nonfarm employment rose, led by durable goods and services, with March total near 4.3 million. Factory jobs reached about 1.6 million, up 4 percent driven by durable goods growth. Defense spending and business investment are expected to keep growth brimming, though consumer demand slows. Investment, incomes, and plant outlays rise, while retail sales face pressure. Car registrations lag, yet still trail the national pace.
