Judge's Order Cools Off Sit-In Surprises Welfare Protest
In Springfield Judge Stephen B. Martin refused to sign an order to halt a sit-in at the Social Welfare Department office. He ordered a show cause hearing today in Woodstock to decide on eviction. About 12 welfare recipients have occupied the Union Street office since Friday over welfare concerns. Governor Deane C. Davis, Attorney General James L. Jeffords, and welfare officials discussed the matter after a high level meeting. The protest remained peaceful with ministers allowed to speak and food brought in.
