Green Mountain Park opened its second year with a 49 night spring harness meeting attracting more than 10 000 fans. The chilly night saw fast racing in a 10 race card under clear skies with heated grandstands and a flood lit finish line. Track officials were surprised by the large turnout.
About 25 Shea Inc wood products workers walked off the job at 6 this morning in North Bennington. Authorities said no reason was given yet for the strike but a statement would come soon. The plant remained open with remaining staff. George E. Shea estimated 50 to 60 employees. State police admonished picketers to avoid intimidation and maintain order.
Soviet official Boboazhan Gafurov charged China with trying to rally black and yellow people against white races and compared it to Nazi racism. The report also covers a Vermont horse race at Pownal where Swift Water led early but Missileman surged to second. Irv Foster won the ninth race, registering over $1,000 in purse money and tying track records for a mile with Missileman and Scar Way at 2:08.1.
The Supreme Court by a 5 to 4 vote rejects a jury trial for former Mississippi Governor Barnett and Governor Johnson Jr. in a criminal contempt case relating to the 1962 Meredith enrollment at the University of Mississippi. The decision sends the case to the Fifth Circuit judges to decide.
In Cyprus unrest flares as Turkish warships move toward a base near the island amid Makarios demand to remove Turkish troops. Two Greek Cypriots are reported killed in fighting near Pakhyammos and in Nicosia, with a UN guard killed near a Turkish barrier. Greek Cypriots are said to surround the village of Alevga as the standoff continues.
The United States mourns General Douglas MacArthur who died at Walter Reed. A solemn New York City wake features a simple caldron steel casket, a five star banner, and an honor guard. President Johnson orders flags at half staff for a week of mourning. Vermont leaders laud MacArthur's tenacity and leadership as the nation reflects on his career.
Sen. Hugh Scott urged Congress to make the Civil Rights Commission permanent and remove it from political trade. He spoke as the Senate debated a House bill banning racial discrimination in voting employment unions education public accommodations and use of federal funds amid stalled quorum.
A Vermont deputy sheriff, Norman Emerson, 35, of West Brattleboro, is charged with breaking into the Mount Snow base lodge and stealing about $8,816. He was arrested in Albany and is to be arraigned in Brattleboro Municipal Court on grand larceny and breaking and entering charges. Emerson, a Windham County deputy sheriff and former Mount Snow part timer, allegedly punched open a safe and fled with the money March 29.
In St Augustine Florida Grace Methodist Church opened its doors to eight Negroes who had been turned away on Easter. Pastor Rev John Gill said the service went smoothly. Malcolm Peabody Jr and Mrs Peabody attended as national attention and an integration drive drew hundreds of demonstrators in the city.
Jay Wulfson, president of the Vermont Railway Corp, forecasts a profit in the companys first year of operation. The forecast appears on page 4 alongside an editorial on Gen Douglas MacArthur. Nearby notices report a Pownal family losing their possessions and home on page 5. A national field worker is set to play a key role at the Arlington PTA district meeting tomorrow on page 5.
The New York Daily News raised its price from five to seven cents effective with today's edition. The move ends the era of the nickel newspaper in New York City, prompted by the 1962 63 newspaper strike and rising costs. other major dailies remain at ten cents.
