State officials after a meeting with Bennington officials and Langlois said measures will tighten surplus foods administration. New eligibility and distribution forms will track status, certify claims, and record monthly food distributions, with part time help hired to assist Langlois.
About 25 Shea Inc. employees at the North Bennington wood products plant walked off Friday for unknown reasons. Owner George E. Shea said the plant’s 50 to 60 workers were not warned and one employee left in the morning with others following later. The plant will operate Monday with those who remained and the owner could not guarantee rehiring of those who quit. A rumor cited a dispute over a vending machine installation.
Gen Douglas MacArthur, 84, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center showed signs of entering a peaceful coma. Army Surgeon General Lt. Gen. Leonard B. Heaton gave a brief statement while doctors reported vital signs including pulse 86 and blood pressure 110 over 60.
Vermont Congressman Robert Stafford told the Bennington Rotary Club that by end of May the Senate will have enough votes to break the civil rights filibuster and pass the bill already approved by the House. He argued the bill is constitutional and urged opponents to take it to the Supreme Court for a test.

Norman C. Emerson, 35, a West Dummerston resident and former Vermont deputy sheriff, is returned from New York after allegedly stealing more than $8,800 from the Mt Snow resort safe. Police say he admitted the theft and was found with $8,100 on his person.
Nashville UPI Lawrence Medlin Convicted of offering $10,000 to juror James Tippens to secure acquittal in James R. Hoffa 1962 conspiracy case. Jury deliberated about three hours. Bond set at $5000. sentence pending. Medlin fifth person convicted in the trial tampering scheme. Hoffa sentenced to eight years for attempted jury rigging.
President Johnson announced the United States and Panama will resume diplomatic relations and begin talks on the Panama Canal Zone. The deal, drafted by the OAS, calls for negotiators to resolve disputes without limitations or pre conditions.
Anchorage endured the strongest aftershock since the Good Friday quake, about 6.0 on the Richter scale, while Kodiak faced 80 mph winds. No deaths reported yet from the aftershock. relief funds and bonds discussed as Alaska mobilizes.
