Hailstorm Causes Fatal Southern Airways Crash Near New Hope

A Southern Airways DC9, hit by hail, plummeted from 15,000 feet onto a two lane highway near New Hope Georgia, crushing cars and buildings. Sixty eight people died and 27 were injured, while ground victims remained unaware until impact. Pilot Captain William W. McKenzie attempted to reach nearby fields but chose the road ending in a fiery wreck as witnesses described a windshield failure and engine loss due to hail ingestion. Ground casualties included a Virginia Beach couple and several residents. FAA officials confirmed hail penetration and loss of power before landing.

Firefighters tackle stubborn blaze on White Creek Road

Firefighters from Shaftsbury and North Bennington fought a stubborn morning blaze on White Creek Road destroying an office garage and connected apartment owned by David Moriarty. The Peter Niles family resided in the apartment and reported the alarm at about 7 20. Bennington Rural and Arlington departments stood by on standby.
