Railroads Drop Fine Demand
Washington DC The nation's railroads dropped their bid to impose a 500000 a day contempt fine on the AFL CIO Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen after the four day walkout against eight major carriers began to wind down as some workers returned to duty. Attorneys noted no immediate press for contempt action but reserved rights to pursue compensation or damages if the strike resumes. Judge Holtzoff agreed to drop the high fine against the union and the smaller penalty against union president H E Gilbert.

Unification Part 1: Steps Toward Bennington’s Town Charter
Bennington voters face a special April 26 election on adopting a new town charter to unify two to four village and district governments into a single town. If the first vote passes, a second vote in Bennington Village would decide giving up its charter, followed by votes in Old Bennington North Bennington and the Bennington Rural Fire District to determine full consolidation. The act outlines a six member select board and retains a separate water board, reflecting legal and practical factors considered by the Unification Study Committee appointed by town officials.
