The Memorial Band will march to the Showgrounds at 7.45 p.m. and perform before a short ceremony with local representatives and the reading of Melbourne’s 100 year old Proclamation. Officials urge wide attendance from town and district as J. L. Bennison prepares a fireworks display.
Remembrance Day will be observed in Benalla on Saturday morning with a service at the Monument in the Gardens starting at 10.45 am. Returned men are urged to attend. The Benalla RSL meeting heard the acting president urge league members to make a special effort to be present. Representatives from Dads Association and Women’s Auxiliary will lay a wreath of remembrance.
Benalla visited Corowa on Saturday for the second match in the M. Pennant Competition. Corowa led early but Benalla, bolstered by Girubh and Sayers, claimed a solid win amid uneven conditions. The home side faced lineup gaps as Jim Ferguson and other players were unavailable for Palmer, and Benalla prepared for the next round at home against Warigaratta.
The Women’s Auxiliary stall raised more than £40 in a street sale on Tuesday with clothing by members. Doll competition won by Miss Carol Hamilton of 67 Smythe Street ticket No. Boo. Dad T McQualter of Almonds passed away Sunday after an active life.
The Benalla East School committee led by M. C. Evans held a working bee at the Tatong pine plantation clearing timber for an expanded area. A winch truck from Tatong aided by SE.C. members helped felled trees near the fence line. More help from parents is sought before Arbor Day with plans to finalize the layout and ensure fire safety, and thanks are extended to all helpers and ladies for tea.

Fortnightly civ evenings with the next at State School on Wednesday November 1. All prospective members invited. Also thank you to donors for the Picnic at Broken Creek Sue event. The Housing Commission plans 100 new homes next year and 23 under construction now with priority to 1945 applicants. Community members urge allocations for diggers and dependants amid concerns over shed housing and displaced persons.
The Benalla Musical and Dramatic Society hosts its first Benalla concert on Friday November 17 at the Shire Hall. The Wangaratta Choral Society participates with two young Australian soloists Miss Margaret Holden and Miss Parkes, both noted figures in violin and chest pieces. A program of choral songs and dramatic tableaux will be staged, with rehearsals completed and anticipation high for an enjoyable evening.
A third attempt will be made to open the lawn courts by the Benalla Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday next, hoping for fine weather. If weather is unfavourable, play will be postponed to later in the weekend. A dance will be held in the club house on Saturday night.
At a Hanahune District Hospital Committee meeting a letter from the Charities Board urged expediting the erection of Keoalla's Memorial Hospital. The letters request the Charities Commission to accelerate the project and instruct the chief architect to prepare the plans.
Heavy rain swept the district Friday with thunder while St James A defeated Ooorambat B on Saturday. The match contributed to a district tally of around 50 points overall.
The minister, speaking in Benalla, noted that after 100 houses are finished by 1951, a further 106 houses are planned for construction. This outlines a substantial expansion of local housing within the stated period.
