Mobile mental health initiative to visit rural centres for short periods with a team including a psychiatrist psychologist and social worker. The aim is to examine children in need provide guidance to parents doctors and teachers and promote preventive mental health understanding in the community.
The council debated yard expansions and land purchases for the markets. Proposals included converting pig pens for accommodation, improving drainage, subdividing sheep pens, concreting several pens, and buying two acres north of the saleyards to allow future expansion.
At Monday's Shire Council meeting Dr J T Martin reported attending last Saturdays snow grounds celebration with Dr W Mann. He noted initial talks with Borough representatives for a joint committee and agreed to cooperate with the Borough in future events and share fireworks costs for Saturday night.
Attendance at the Infant Welfare Centre for the quarter ended September 10 totalled 1044 with 8686 in Shire 305 in Holding Centre 41 in others 12. Sister Smith noted attendances had not been so high and that 77 birth notifications were received.
At a Monday Shire Council meeting Jefer from the Borough outlined plans for water and sewerage services to land near boundaries after subdivisions. A suggestion to hold a conference with the Shire of Benalla to discuss subdivisions gained support, with a three-councillor sub-committee to meet later. Dr Cook and Dr Colsh weighed in on broad implications including past mains costs, and the council agreed to proceed with the conference.
Miss Dawn Dosser of Arundel Street was hit by a car at about 1 p m on Monday while cycling. She was admitted to Bush Nursing Hospital with head injuries and shock. Two cars passed in opposite directions when the vehicle traveling in the same direction struck her. Both drivers stopped to help, and Miss Dosser received three stitches for a head wound.
Dr W MacGregor called a near town road the most disgraceful piece of road and warned of danger at 10 to 25 mph. He urged action by Tatong E Riding officials, saying Devenish Riding councillors would not help. Dr Payne disagreed slightly as the motion passed.
The council backed a mortuary plan after a Crown Law letter and Public Works adverse reports. A site must be identified and economic viability weighed against new Benella offices. Officials urged contacting the Public Works Department and MLA J A Cook for clarity and action.
At the Shire Council meeting Dr F F A Cook warned that a train would arrive in Benalla on 1 April 1951 as part of Centenary Celebrations. Councillors mocked and children’s turnout was noted as likely. The speaker paused before continuing.
The Benalla Borough Council decided to ask the Country Roads Board to erect limit signs at three main intersections. Engineer L D Faweknner advised that the 15 mile per hour speed limit through the town had been renewed.
Council discussed 319 pounds for garden grandstand repairs after an engineer reported disrepair at the Wittie building. Cr Talochino questioned coverage. turf piles discovered in a room prompted the mayor to demand removal within seven days.
The council approved £30 toward improvements at Thoona Recreation Reserve including conveniences, fencing, topdressing and grading with a required minimum £40 match from the council. Work must finish by June 15, 1951 and standard supervision conditions apply. Benallashire councillors meeting Monday bist accepted the allocation under those terms.
A public meeting will be held in Benalla to form a local branch of the National Safety Council after a field officer from headquarters made a visit and the Mayor will preside.
