Wounded Knee Pact Signals Step Toward End of Occupation

The first phase of a disarmament agreement was signed as Indian militants surrendered weapons and nonresidents will exit Wounded Knee by Wednesday morning. AIM leaders did not sign but indicated the group will honor the accord.

Peace talks eyed for Sioux treaty review in May meeting

A May meeting with five or more White House representatives and Sioux headmen and chiefs will reexamine the 1868 treaty on the reservation. AIM contends the treaty grants all land west of the Missouri River in South Dakota to the Indians. In Wounded Knee, Lawrence LaMont, 31, a Pine Ridge Indian, was buried after being killed April 27 in a clash with federal forces as militants were involved. A 100 round salute marked the burial.

Special prosecutor will probe Watergate case

Elliot Richardson pledged to appoint a special prosecutor to head the Watergate investigation after confirmation as attorney general. He said the appointee would report only to him, signaling Nixon would not direct the probe. Richardson faces Senate scrutiny and aims for broad independence and staff support. The comment followed reports that John W. Dean III could testify Nixon personally praised cover up. He expects Senate confidence in the appointee. Minnesota Senate okays higher education bill with Waseca closure

The Minnesota Senate approved a 395.4 million dollar higher education package with a plan to close the Waseca two year agricultural school by early 1975, while also approving a PERA overhaul raising benefits for about 81,000 active and retired workers. The package links tuition hikes at state colleges to funding, and envisions shifting Rosemount station and Waseca technical programs if the package advances.

Bemidji Resident Killed in One-Car Accident

A 26 year old Bemidji man died in a one car rollover after midnight Friday near the junction of Highways 71 and 1, three miles south of Northome. Dave Peterson, formerly of International Falls, was alone in the 1966 Buick Skylark owned by James Scheela. Peterson worked at Bemidji Bowl and had been in International Falls returning to Bemidji. funeral set for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in International Falls.
