High Court declines to reopen abortion ruling

Supreme Court declined to reconsider its decision that states may not prohibit abortions in licensed facilities before viability. It directed lower courts to apply the Jan. 22 ruling to nine states and remanded 22 cases in Texas and Georgia. Nicknames and detailed opposition arguments were noted without new medical data.

Minnesota governor urges Vietnam service bonus legislation

Gov. Wendell Anderson called for swift passage of a veteran bonus bill offering up to 300 dollars for domestic service 600 dollars for Southeast Asia service and 1000 dollars for prisoners of war missing in action and dependents of service members killed in action. He proposed a one year state income tax exemption for returned POWs and free tuition at state colleges for veterans held prisoner or dependents of slain servicemen. The plan would be funded by 20 year general obligation bonds with an estimated 58 million dollar price tag.

Recycling Center Opens Weekends at David Park Creamery

The center will operate weekends from March 3 to March 24 at the David Park Creamery Building with Friday and Saturday hours. Eric Angvall says the setup offers a temporary leasing option while seeking a permanent location and notes a $5 share sale for the recycling corporation at 101 Beltrami Ave.

Planning Commission reviews Nestle Grimes permit and airport zoning

Bemidji planning panel met with four of seven members present. It recommended approval of a 12 by 20 foot addition for Nestle and Dennis Grimes at 1018 Bemidji Avenue in the R-6 zone, with a new non conforming use permit required due to size change. The council will decide March 5. The panel also discussed drafting an airport zoning ordinance with state help and named a four member committee to proceed, to be joined by county officials and lawyers.
