Nixon suspends meat import quotas for 1973
President Nixon halted meat import quotas for 1973 to curb rising supermarket meat prices. Treasury Secretary Shultz said the move may not cut prices immediately and that domestic production will drive most supply. He noted foreign share could rise to about eight percent and that quotas may be reinstated if conditions change, with quarterly reviews by the agriculture secretary. Australia and New Zealand supply about 70 percent of U.S. shipments.
