Marathonian Ends Duluth Lakes Season After Harrowing Voyage
The Liberian steamship Marathonian sailed from Duluth Duluth-Superior on December 12 marking the end of the 1973 lake season. After two weeks in dry dock for bow repairs and multiple engine troubles including a boiler breakdown, the ship departed with 100 tons of fuel despite a pending Seaway closing date and a fresh snowstorm. The voyage closed the longest ocean shipping season in the port since 1959. The season began April 5 with the Soviet vessel Zakarpatye, surpassing last year’s end date set by Helene on December 10.

Welfare fraud charges hit Hennepin County workers
Barbara Wirtz twenty five and Patricia L Mauer twenty one of Minneapolis face charges in a case alleging they fraudulently obtained two hundred seventy five dollars in AFDC benefits. Wirtz worked in welfare processing and allegedly filled out a sister s application claiming she had twins. The sisters shared an apartment and Wirtz resigned after the arrest. If convicted they face up to five years jail and a thousand dollar fine.
