Medicare enrollment rules change for eligible individuals
Kenneth D. Schlichting, Social Security District Manager in Bemidji, explained that new law changes the enrollment window for Medicare medical insurance. Previously a three year deadline applied, now general enrollments occur January through March yearly with a base premium of 31.80 dollars per month and a 10 percent increase after each year of non enrollment. Disabled individuals newly eligible and those reaching age 65 after June 1973 are automatically enrolled unless they opt out, with the option to enroll later at any Social Security office during the first three months of a year.
