Planning Commission rejects care home for six at Irvine Ave

Bemidji approves rezoning for Holiday Inn site

Bemidji City Planning Commission voted to rezone the area to B-3 for a Holiday Inn Motel at the north side of U.S. Hwy 2 near the City Airport. Fred C. Donaldson of Winslow R. Chamberlain Equity Corp. said the firm would supply its own sewer and water if needed and create 50 to 75 jobs planned to start this summer.

Bemidji City Council approves annual task force grant role

In a three minute special session on Monday night the Bemidji City Council passed a resolution to authorize the city as grantee for the Northwest Minnesota Law Enforcement Task Force. The action is a required annual formality to receive grant funds.

Frohn Township Votes to Join Bemidji Rural Fire Association

Voters at Frohn Township polls Monday evening April 24 chose to join the Bemidji Rural Fire Association by about 75 percent in favor. Pioneer press time reported no official tally yet, while Bemidji Fire Department confirmed the decision.

Area man charged in brawl death

A 24 year old Cass Lake man, Douglas J. Cloud, was charged in Itasca County Court with second degree murder and aggravated assault after a April 17 Ball Club brawl. Cloud was jailed in Grand Rapids on $25,000 bond after being transferred from Beltrami County. Louis Wilson, 50, Ball Club, died of head injuries in a Duluth hospital. two other Ball Club men were beaten.

Leech Lake boycott lifted with selective stand promised

Leech Lake Indian Reservation moves to end the two month boycott of white merchants citing progress on hunting and fishing rights. A selective boycott against businesses opposing the tribal stance will start May 13 as negotiations for a voluntary conservation code and payments continue with state officials. The tribe plans to host the National American Indian Movement Convention May 10 to 15 at Cass Lake, drawing hundreds including delegates from across North America.

Five file for board seats in District 31 race

Five area residents filed for the two open District 31 school board seats with filing closing today April 25. Incumbents William Schwartz and Richard Vogel seek re election. Challengers Bob Kohl Frank Goodell and Verne Tollefson also filed. Election set for May 16.
