Fire swept from St James Episcopal Church on Lock Street to the adjoining McLennan flats in Syracuse yesterday morning. The Standard Watch Company occupied the McLennan ground floor and sustained heavy losses, with total fire damage estimated between 75,000 and 80,000 dollars. The McLennan stock, built three years ago, valued about 30,000 dollars, was insured, and the Hoerstrung house and furnishings suffered extensive damage. Overall losses in the city over the last twenty four hours are projected to exceed 71,206.20 dollars.
In New Orleans on March 10 the bodies of Saturday’s victims were laid to rest. Marchesi Monasterio and Trahina were unclaimed and sent to Potter's field via charity wagon. Polits Comises Bagnetto were buried with a single carriage. Bagnetto’s horse rode alone. Josephe A Bchecs had the largest funeral with several pallbearers including Italians. Caruso and Macheea were removed to St Louis Cathedral for imposing ceremonies.
The US ship Galena ran ashore at Bayhead and lies upright on the Leitch with heavy water in its hull. The hull is bogged and the mainmast head sprung. Sea continues to break over the ship until midnight. Nina assists to shore and salvage is planned. Officers and crew are ashore in local houses awaiting revenue cutter to take them to Newport.
In San Francisco on March 16 the funeral of Senator Gorge Hearst proceeded with no sermon or eulogy. The Episcopal burial rite was used at church and cemetery. Governor Waterman, legislature staff, Admiral Benham, General Gibbons and their aides led the procession, joined by local groups and many friends.
In Brownsville, a letter signed Many Women claimed Elvis Mitchell, 63, assaulted Maggie, a 16 year old. The Western Pennsylvania Huminine society investigated and found the claim unsubstantiated. Local women organized to lynch the father but proceedings were begun against Mitchell.
Assung Pans New Jersey March 16 Ex Mayor Charles Reedler of Jersey City receiver for Jacob Lorillard Brick Works at Keyport has paid all claims held by Keyport clot and also of the destitute employees.
A mob of about 3,000 gathers around the Clay statue in New Orleans to avenge Chief Davids C. Hennessey’s murder. Eleven of nineteen indicted men are killed by hanging or shooting inside the parish prison, after a jury failed to convict amid allegations of tampering.
United States reports the arrival of James O Kelly W K Redmond Henry Harrison and John O Connor delegates for Irish Nationalist funds arriving aboard the Etruria in New York. They were greeted by a reception committee and addressed by Michael Breslin. The party claimed wide support and pledged to push for Irish political aims while noting McCarthyite opposition. In Atlantic City a death seen as possible murder is reported as Laura Parnell lies dead in a cottage with a baby nearby. authorities investigate with no clear clues.
In Chicago a large Italian gathering condemned the New Orleans massacre of Italians. Dr Volponi urged satisfaction, called for investigations into police protection, and criticized hostile press coverage. A cable to Rome was prepared demanding home government intervention. Halstead discovers a well dressed man’s body in water near Howell’s switch on the Pennsyl vania Poughkeepsie and Boston line at the Stoddard farm. Officials believe the passenger fell from a night train passing the spot around 2 30, after being blown from a car during the journey.
New York March 16 The six days go as you please race began at midnight in Madison Square Garden with Boly Fitzsimmons giving the word. A long list of starters included I C Moore John Hughes Dan Henry Robert Wheeler George Cartwreghs and many others. Ex-Champion James Albert did not start due to a guarantee shortfall of 3002. The crowd was smaller than prior starts Lepper Hughes led the opening laps with George Tracey first on the track and Gus Guerrero first to complete a mile as the early pace showed Guerrero maintaining the lead at the end of the initial quarter hour.
A massive blaze in Syracuse New York at Hogan Block 253 West Fayette Street swept through twelve blocks. Wind at fifty mph fueled rapid spread destroying the Hogan Block United States Hotel Tracey block Newell and Pay buildings and the Seneca House. Firemen from nearby cities helped. Over 36 stores burned with losses over 1 000 000 dollars. All occupants escaped unharmed.
A March 16 fire at Weyand's brewery corner Washington and Gooddell streets caused major damage estimated near 100000. Spontaneous combustion and an explosion collapsed the north wall and severely damaged the adjoining dwelling, with water and smoke spreading through the lower floors. Insurance covered the loss. York Pa March 16 Michael Schall of the banking firm Schill and Danner admitted failure and confessed judgment for 190000. He is said to have recently lost several hundred thousand dollars through endorsements and other means.
Lovisville hosts the third congress of the Scotch Irish people and their descendants in America from May 14 to 17. The invitation comes from city leaders including the Board of Trade Commercial clubs and the local Scotch Irish society.
John D Rockefeller of Standard Oil fame donated 10000 dollars to Shutliffe College as an endowment with the condition that the amount be increased to 50009 dollars through additional subscriptions.
