Two Lives Lost In Genesee River Flood At Belmont
In Belmont on Saturday, two men William Allen and Chauncey Stearns died when a bridge spanning the Genesee River gave way as floodwaters from heavy rains surged through the area. The disaster washed out bridges, flooded cellars, and caused extensive property damage across Belmont and nearby communities. Allen, 37, and Stearns, 71, were on the 170 foot iron bridge watching the flood when the span collapsed. witnesses say Allen fought to reach shore before vanishing, while Stearns clung to ironwork then disappeared.
