A Blair County correspondent recalls a scene on a canal boat where a sick, emaciated painter begged to be allowed passage east to reach his mother in Burlington. The captain listened as the committee spoke, and sympathy overruled harshness, granting him a way forward.
The excerpt from Sir Charley Napier’s memoirs notes American soldiery as brave and courteous, describes Yankee frigates driven off and a prisoner dining with Napier, and lampoons British siege tactics. It mentions Baltimore seven thousand troops, contrasts noble combat with crude iron weapons, and mocks barbarous artillery methods.
