The judge marries for rank. Maud remains poor and later sees the judge’s empty happiness. The tale closes with thears of what might have been and the enduring pull of simple love.

A man calling himself David H Ware died of a congestive chill at a New York visitor’s home on Sunday November 1 1857. He wore a blue suit with a belt and butcher knife name on the handle read David Ho Ware. He spoke little and said he had traveled west from Jacksonville seeking lands and claims, with a memorandum noting J T Poser Bellevue Sarpy Co March 4 1867.
