The public recalls an early morning burglary in Bedford linked to a suspect nicknamed Raffles. Police describe the man as 5 ft 7 in, slim, wearing a black slouch hat and later a dark derby on leaving, with a mission to study the interior. A grand jury may be empaneled to pursue the case.
Bedford night officer D D Gipson observed a man with a key enter Ades clothing store at 2:15 am. The burglar, said to be familiar with the store and its stock, left with a tailored suit and was later identified as Raffies by witnesses. The Annex of the Methodist church was filled on President's Day as Mr and Mrs Mc Gibney opened the Matinee Musicale. President Mrs J G Phipps outlined the group’s aims to promote music in Bedford and education, noting a growing membership and plans for artist recitals.
Bradley & Son and Henry Struble Cut Stone Co. secure large contracts across the country, aiding nearby Bedford firms. Dugan Cut Stone Co. subcontracts the Scranton Station basement project in Pennsylvania to Struble. Furst Kerber cut another Struble contract headed to Grand Forks North Dakota.
The Monon Railroad intends to erect extensive repair shops near New Albany within months to service engines and cars on the division. A newly completed roundhouse for sixteen engines will be complemented by shops nearby, providing jobs and industrial growth for the city. Previously the machine shops at New Albany employed over 200 skilled workers before moving to Lafayette.

Jim McDonald, long a nationally known convict from Bedford, asks parole from the State Reformatory at Jeffersonville. Once accused in 1904 of murdering Miss Sarah Schafer, he was acquitted after a two week Lawrence Circuit Court trial. He later pleaded guilty to arson, was sentenced to the reformatory, and now appeals for release due to good prison conduct.
The Indianapolis morning paper reports Governor Hanly refused clemency for Fred Baugh, jailed for forging a check in Clinton County. Imprisoned 1906 for 2 to 14 years, Baugh escaped while trusted for good behavior, then returned home and surrendered, reducing chances for early pardon.
Ruth Emenheiser, sixteen, testifies about the Shagtown whitecap raid and Gaddis’s actions, saying she went with him of her own will and that he killed Jesse Robinson, later going insane in jail. Doctors predict possible recovery in years at the asylum while supporters back her account.
An accident at a silo near Dudley town leaves Albert Klinge wounded by a fork handle driven into his body. His son George Klinge and William Brandt assisted. doctors from Dudley town and the city attended. The 23 year old unmarried man remained conscious though in severe pain and is reported in dangerous condition.
Mrs. Florence Eker accuses her husband Engineer Wker of stealing the horse valued at 75 dollars. Eker denies theft arguing one cannot steal his own property. The case ties to divorce filings with claims of drunkenness cruelty and jealousy. Engineer Eker posted bond after arrest in Lafayette following a Bloomington warrant.
William Goetz a longtime yard conductor in the Chicago Heights freight service resigns. He previously worked as a brake man on the Watseka and Terre Haute passenger train since 1904 and held several transfers before returning to Chicago Heights. It is rumored he may join the Chicago Southern under Trainmaster Fred W. Smith. A dispatch from Indianapolis notes Margaret Williams recovering from typhoid, and Arthur Johnson departed for Washington, D. C. on business.
The seventh annual DAR Indiana conference concluded with a banquet at the Tourner Hotel in Bloomington for delegates and officers. Officers were elected by acclamation for 1908 including state regent Mrs Guthrie and vice regent Mrs Dinwiddie. Muncie won the next conference hosting rights ahead of Indianapolis.
Milton Myers appealed the Commissioners court decision on Third Ward remonstrance validity. The case, bond filed, will be heard at the next Lawrence Circuit term. Saloon forces claim a withdrawal petition of about seventy to eighty names could not reach the auditor.
Horace Pet tijohn becomes treasurer elect succeeding George Stevenson at year start. The county treasurer’s bond drops from 250000 to 30000 due to a new law requiring daily deposits. The treasurer may keep 500 for incidental expenses. once deposits are made, his money responsibility ends. Noblesville Ledger.

The Deckard Hotel in Bedford Indiana will transfer management from E L Deckard to Mrs Julia Miller starting November 1. Miller, a Bedford resident, will lease the Deckard for one year with option to extend. The Deckard and its annex have grown busy feeding 142 guests yesterday. The Deckards will relocate to Pensacola Florida to manage the Escambia Hotel, a 100 room hostelry, bringing daughters Stella Maude and Ethel.
Theodore Pearson arrives from South Bend Washington en route to Springville to visit his parents Bud and his wife. Once a country boy, he now owns a share in a lumber firm and serves as mayor. His wife is visiting relatives in Pennsylvania and will join him later for a family visit.
The Bloomington World reports no official ministerial return for Jefferson Davis and Sarah Knox Taylor’s 1835 marriage, leaving a blank entry in the county archives though the license exists. The gap prompts discussion by historian Walter L. Fleming as he seeks a certified copy for his history. Also noted is Hancock Taylor’s bond and local fruit expert Joseph Burton, the “fruit wizard,” with 10,000 bushels of apples and a past shipment to England.
