Monroe county politicians speculate on who will be named deputy prosecutor. John H. Underwood told editors he has not considered the vacancy and will not discuss or promise an appointment until he is ready to assume duties. He gave no commitments or talks with anyone about the post.
The record lists county vote pluralities for Cullop Chaney across the district. Greene 84, Sullivan 1686, Owen 305, Martin 104, Daviess 127, Lawrence 422, Monroe 23, with Cullop Chaney totaling a district plurality of 2,256.

Bedford police arrested Herschel Baker as he alighted from a buggy at the Standish livery barn after a robbery at Mrs. James Webster near Mountain Springs. The pair, masked, pistol whipped occupants and fled with cash while a companion, William McCarty, was later captured in Linton. Hundreds in spurious bills and a tool kit were found on Baker.
Washington Republicans predicted James Watson would be invited to a Taft Cabinet post, possibly Navy or Commerce and Labor. Taft valued Watson’s integrity and ability, with his name once floated for Navy under Roosevelt. Local supporters credit Watson’s Indiana campaign leadership for electoral success.
The second trial of Emory Cassell for the Mills homicide near Quincy started Saturday in Spencer Circuit Court before Judge William A. Johnson. The first trial ended with a hung jury 11 for acquittal and 1 for conviction. Cassell asked for appointed counsel as a poor man, funds exhausted, and Willis Hitchcock and John Robinson were appointed. The Owen County council may appropriate 700 dollars to pay them.
The county council refuses to appropriate 500 for a hitchrack. Voters W. J. Fee and Fred Owens oppose. Anthony Johnson abstains, defeating the measure. Four to seven support, needing seven or five. Supporters were O Harrow Hollard Shields and Smith. opponents move away from the public square. Council also votes 604 more to investigate the books Plaamington Telephone. Luella Hartman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hartman, of South H street, is numbered with the sick.
Mrs. Robert Harris announces the engagement of her daughter Sylvia Harris to Clarence Hartman a Bedford machinist. A surprise bridal shower with twenty five guests featured presents and a luncheon. The couple plan to marry this month and reside in Bedford.
Obituary note for Leah Davis Barclay born 1885 daughter of Michael N Davis and Jane. She married John H Barclay in 1901 with children Lois Jane and John H Barclay Jr. Service held at First M E church, burial at Green Hill cemetery. Mention of pallbearers, clubs, and family sympathy.
Governor Hanly announced Fred L. Gemmer as the new State Board of Tax Commissioners member succeeding John C. Wingate with Luman K. Babcock named secretary to replace Gemmer. Wingate’s term expired in March 1907. Gemmer’s four year commission begins December 1, and Babcock joined the governor’s staff yesterday. Wingate was appointed by Governor Mount.
Samuel L. Scott county superintendent and Democratic county central committee chair has received an offer to become assistant to Robert J. Aley who beat him for the nomination. Scott likely will accept the position, a role seen as next to the superintendent. Friends here previously protested Aley’s nomination defeat.
The 1909 Hicks almanac offers a colored portrait of Prof Hicks and the Hicks weather forecasts. It claims originality, includes old and new features, and markets at 85 cents by mail or 30 cents on news stands with a free copy in a two-book bundle. Agents wanted.
The bill of exceptions in John R. Walsh’s fraud case was filed in the United States district court in Chicago. The conviction is to be presented to the Court of Appeals, with a decision expected after several months. Marriage license issued to Calvin Eddy and Lucindi Heltonburg. Mrs Hetty BrantizSha, called to Orleans by her mother Mary F Asiichell’s death, visiting sister Mrs LB Millican.

A six year old girl, Belle Lee, daughter of Fred and Mrs. Lee, died after her dress caught fire from an open fireplace. The accident occurred on a farmhouse between Ellettsville and Bean Blossom as her parents were away at an old mill. She died at 10 o'clock after hours of agony. Funeral set for 10 Saturday at the Presbyterian church in Ellensville with burial in the nearby cemetery. she was niece of James Campbell.

David Root a respected farmer living near Pinhook died Saturday at 6 30 aged 75 He leaves a wife and several grown children including Mrs Homer Box and John V Root of New Albany The funeral was Sunday afternoon at 2 from the Pinhook church. Edward Ford’s second Indiana murder trial for the killing of Joel and Frank McCoy at the Widow Hawley farm near Unionville is set for Tuesday November 24 Ford has been jailed since the incident. Prof W O Bohannon of Evansville faces a damages suit from Miss Nettie Northcott set for November 18 with Attorney Ira C Batman representing Northcott.

Miss Winnie Davis daughter of John Davis a Palmyra farmer lost three fingers and a thumb from her left hand after picking a dynamite cartridge with a hairpin on her family's Stump blasting field. The cartridge exploded causing unconsciousness. surgeons amputated the injured digits and she faced recovery barring blood poisoning.
