A health note urges treating a torpid liver by strengthening digestion first. It promotes Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery as a non secret non alcoholic remedy that cleanses poisons and boosts liver and stomach activity. The ad warns against drastic drugs and substitutes of unknown composition.
John A. Smith of 223 Penn Street Jeffersonville proclaims he can alter the weather for a $10,000 fee. He personally delivered a letter to Curtis W. Ballard, Clark Circuit Clerk, claiming to be a superior weather expert and requesting a trial to break the clouds and bring sunshine.
Dr. J. N. Hurty directs a statewide exhibit of charts and photographs on tuberculosis smallpox typhoid and other diseases. The portable sets travel town to town with a guide from a benevolent society to explain prevention methods and push vaccination.
Governor Hanly files a 18 page report opposing Bedford limestone and urging granite for the Tippecanoe battlefield monument. He cites a commission report on the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis and notes granite is chosen, while defending Indiana stone and critiquing opponents.
James R. Bennett sues P. M. and B Stone Company for 15000 damages claiming a heavy stone dislodged from quarry blocks on April 13 1907 crippled him while employed as a derrick hooker. An abandoned Peacock Coal Mining Company mine at Massey flooded when T C Bugg released Patoka river water into it. The resulting explosion frightened Oakand City residents, with rocks and water thrown high as the air burst through the shaft. The mine, flooded in January, was pumped out recently and deemed worthless.
The Central Insane Asylum at Indianapolis refused Harvey Hinkle admission after proofs failed to show current insanity. Officials require an insanity commission to determine if he is insane now before accepting him. If found sane, he will be held for trial on the Edna Rogers shooting indictment.
Since the Masons moved into new Norton Block lodge rooms fitted with new furniture, the old hickory chairs in use for 60 years were presented to members as souvenirs. The chairs, with split bottoms, remain sturdy and are valued highly by the members.
John W. Hudson reports the colt Taft is a promising thoroughbred foal from the driving mare bred by him. Taft is a son of Hemenway who has a 2 11 pace record and the dam has a 2 35 mark.
Sam Lee a prominent Chicago laundryman visited last week seeking a new laundry site. He operates a chain from Chicago to the Pacific slope and expressed strong encouragement. He will return next week to finalize plans for what should be a profitable venture from the outset.
The 1901 law banning city or town officials from selling anything to their municipality was upheld in Lowell v McKay. McKay, former town board president, must repay 1083.44 for coal sold for the town plant with a 141 drayage charge, despite acting with honest motives. Judge Hadley ruled such contracts void against public policy and warned officials to know the law. Harvey Hinkle, recently acquitted of McClintock murder by reason of insanity, now faces a new charge of shooting at Miss Edna Rogers with intent to kill. A prisoner at the Monroe county jail started a small blaze by dropping a lit cigarette into a feather bed Saturday night at 8 o'clock. The fire department was summoned but the fire was put out before they arrived.
Bedford finalizes an appropriation increase from 50 000 to 65 000 for a new building on the Fourteenth and K streets site. Senator Hemenway with Congressman Chaney led the effort, with work poised to begin this summer barring unforeseen delays.

Michael T. Poling of Nashville was nominated yesterday by Republicans in convention at Bloomington for Representative of Brown and Monroe counties. Poling is a former Nashville postmaster and a leading Brown county Republican.
Mrs. Lucy Wagner of St. Louis lies seriously ill at home after a monkey faced fly bite. Dr. D C Healy notes the insect to be about three to four inches long with a head one third to one half inch in diameter and a face resembling a monkey under the microscope.
A gaming room above the Harris saloon on the South Side was raided. Inmates were arrested and gambling paraphernalia including a crap table and a card table were confiscated. The fixtures were stored at police headquarters for trial. Eight sports bonded for appearance and were released. The case is set for Wednesday in police court.

Farmers report wood corn weather with showers moistening dry soil. Bottom lands flooded earlier will be plowable this week and corn planting should finish within a week replacing oats clover and wheat ruined by recent floods.

A marriage license was granted to Leonard C Barnett of Sparksville and Grace Lee of Fort Ritner. Cal Bair appointed guardian of Mrs Sarah J Seibert, not Ney Seibert as previously reported.
John H. Allen Sr. of Fort Ritner a prominent Lawrence county farmer visited Bedford today on business. He has subscribed to the Main for 25 years, marking tomorrow the anniversary of his first subscription to the Bedford Journal later renamed the Mail.
Bloomington May 18 Dr Victor Keen hydrophobia specialist at the Pasteur Institute Indianapolis was invited to lecture at Indiana University tonight but was summoned to Chicago by telegram from J Ogden Armour after Armour's daughter was bitten by a mad dog. The Bloomington lecture was postponed.
Waterworks pumps pull gravel from White river bed toward town and deposit it into service lines. A bullet sized stone lodged in a supply pipe can throttle or halt water flow, blamed on pressure though mains carry excess water. Plumbers note pebbles in a single service pipe. advise a good screen in the suction pipe and at the pipe’s lower end.

David M. Owens 42 of Rego Orange county died Monday after an illness of organic heart disease. Remains will be interred in Bedford after his father J W Owens, a Justice of the Peace, brought him to town. Aunt Jane Dodd, pioneer resident near Mitchell, died Saturday at about 80, aunt of Hugh Dodd and George M. Dodd.
