The United States demands action from Germany and not promises in the new note. President Wilson approved the form at 10:15 this morning and Secretary Bryan signed an hour later. The note, about 1200 to 1500 words, will be released Friday morning and delivered to Germany via Ambassador Gerard.
The British battleship Goliath, a 12 950 ton vessel built in 1896 and 418 feet long with 750 crew, was torpedoed at the Dardanelles according to a Royal Navy admiralty announcement. Loss of life estimated at 500.
Sol Cornish of the north side was arrested Thursday by Chief John Woodruff on a wife beating charge and jailed in default of 200 bond to await Friday trial before Mayor Fields. This is his second such arrest in two weeks. He had been in hiding. his wife reportedly was badly beaten last encounter. A guilty verdict could send him to a penal farm.
Oscar Inman former Bedford resident now telegraph operator for the Chicago and North Western at Oneida Iowa arrived to visit friends and relatives for a month. He recalled his boyhood and said a trainload of Bedford stone passed through his road stirring nostalgia for Old Indiana.
Bloomington druggist Hays Hunter, once paralyzed from the waist down and near death ten days ago, shows much improvement and there is hope for recovery. Mr and Mrs Thomas G Glover, visitors from St Petersburg Florida, stayed with Geo P Parks and family. They will spend the summer in Bedford and vicinity and note it is twelve years since their last visit in September.
At 1 30 Thursday Grant Armstrong and family turning from 16th into J Street caused their auto to skid into a corner mailbox. Nobody was hurt though the event caused excitement. W T Embree showed wheat on his farm badly infected with fly.
Clyde Fisher and Carl Fisher reportedly took a route associated with the Carbolig aid operation. The mention suggests a local incident or drive involving the two individuals.
Clyde Burton, about 30, of Mitchell, killed himself Thursday by taking carbolic acid while returning from a job at Hays Livery Barn. He traveled with Lem Brock. Burton died in the car before reaching a physician. The rescue of the act’s motive remains unclear as Burton’s mother is in California. Meanwhile Bedford hosts racing events and Dixie Highway route talks feature Taggart and Fisher visiting Martinsville, Bedford, Paoli, and French Lick to map a possible route and coordinate county road improvements and local committees.
Mrs Julia Ann Lawrence died Wednesday afternoon from tuberculosis at her home. She had lived in the county for many years and leaves a husband, two daughters, and a son. Funeral arrangements were pending.
Mrs Julia Ann Jawrence wife of William Lawrence died at her home from tuberculosis at 18th and 8th streets. She leaves a husband two children and is survived by parents Mr and Mrs George Clendennin. Funeral Friday at 2 pm at Regular Baptist Church West 24th street with Rev Doyle Radcliff in charge. Burial in Beech Grove Cemetery. Mrs Anna Fisher and sons Albert and William arrived from Lafayette to live with her mother Mrs Elizabeth Dunihue West Sixteenth street.
An official at Ft. Sam Houston says if the United States entered war with Germany, it could raise and train 500000 soldiers within six months and a total of over a million within nine months. He predicts rapid expansion of the regular army, volunteer divisions, and broad militia mobilization to support large European combat deployment.
Mrs George Tapp who broke her hip when thrown under a heavy express wagon had a troubled night but rested Moderately well after dawn. Mrs Josie Tapp, mother of Mr Tapp, arrived from Carleton to be with her son and wife during the injuries.
Bob Owens and his bloodhounds were summoned to Whiteland Indiana between Seymour and Indianapolis to trail burglars who broke into a general store. Unable to check dogs through at the local office the team used an auto from H E Clark and departed around 9 30 this morning for the overland chase.
The body of Ora Richardson, a 16 year old man, died early Wednesday near the Southeastern tracks at 16th street from tuberculosis. He had lived in an outdoor tent to regain health and was taken to Mitchell for burial in the cemetery there after the overland transport.
