In French Lick Indiana on February 19 Hiram Burton aged 36 left a saloon for home and was found by searchers the next day standing upright against a rail fence about two miles south of town frozen stiff. Death likely from exposure. He leaves a wife and five children.
Three inmates Ambrose Nickless Will Stark and a youth named Coleman escaped from Bedford jail Thursday around 3:30 pm by sawing floor bars and slipping into a corridor then outside. Sheriff Smith was away in Indianapolis. Nickless faces petit larceny charges from six months ago with a history of escapes and a hung jury.
A flood of gamblers and grafters from across Indiana arrives in Indianapolis to oppose Representative Hastings's proposal to empower law officers to crack down on gambling. A casino operator claimed about 10,000 gamblers exist in the state and vows to contest any move that threatens their business.

He is held his wife left him and moved toward Kentucky while he worked as a carpenter to support his family.
A controversial Edwards bill to regulate waiters and tipping was withdrawn after a dramatic scene in the Indiana House. A delegation of African American waiters, porters, and bell hops surrounded Edwards at his desk, demanding withdrawal as representatives debated rights and privileges. The lobbyists, led by a spokesman calling Edwards the gentleman from Lawrence, argued the bill was vicious and would raise hotel wages. After attempts to grant the lobby access and leave of absence for Edwards, the measure was definitively killed and observers left the chamber.
