Fire Chief James Cornwell found a burning cigar stub igniting a sack of excelsior stuffed in a grate at the C. L. Baker store on 15th and J streets. The fire was extinguished and the sack’s contents were put out. It appears the excelsior was placed to keep out the cold.
Lai Tomei an Italian from Reeds Station died Wednesday afternoon at 5 o clock in City Hospital after several weeks with pneumonia. He was a quarry worker, single, with relatives in Italy. Funeral Friday forenoon with burial at Green Hill.
A severe knife slash injured a woman in the north part on Wednesday night. Police were not deterred and investigated the incident.
The George Kraft Company of Chicago has purchased the C. A. Kessler 5 and 10 cent store in this city. Kraft took charge Thursday with Mr. Van Balkenhert of the company named to handle temporary duties.
The House Judiciary B committee endorsed a bill to let mayors of fifth class cities appoint or discharge police and fire chiefs and city attorneys, challenging current council control. Bloomington residents have long opposed centralizing power with Mayor Harris, while supporters claim it improves government and accountability.
Mrs. Sarah Paynter former Bedford resident died at her son Dr H M Paynter’s home in Salem on Thursday after a recent stroke. She was over 75 and beloved by many. Granddaughter Mrs J Marley Hall received word of the death that morning. Mr and Mrs Hall and their children left for Salem to attend the funeral.
Local Knights of Pythias members traveled to Oolitic Wednesday night to attend a mortgage burning program by the Oolitic lodge. They were taken in new auto trucks. The Oolitic team plans to visit Walloa Friday night to perform third degree work.
Henry Leatherman, shot recently at Stonington, underwent surgery Thursday to remove a deep buried lead pellet between the first rib and shoulder blade. Surgeons Freeland and Simpson extracted the bullet, and Leatherman remains hospitalized at City Hospital.
The condition of Uncle Abe Ikerd east of the city, 95 years old, who has been seriously ill for weeks, shows a slight improvement. Relatives had abandoned hope, but now some hope remains for recovery from the illness.
Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock released the latest distribution of postal savings bonds. Indianapolis subscribed $9,920, ranking thirteenth nationwide, while Bedford reported $1,900, placing it tenth in the state. Other Indiana totals included New Albany $6,560 and Logansport $3,200. Also noted: Tee Woolery's improvement in Tombstone Arizona and pension increase for Isaac D. Mc Pike to $30 monthly starting December 23, 1912.
George Steincamp traveled to his mother's Brownstown township home and reported three or four full grown wildcats on the farm. No damage has occurred so far according to Seymour Democrat.
In Washington the senate approved the District of Columbia appropriation bill at 11.6 million for the next year and took up the rivers and harbors measure at 40.8 million before adjourning. An executive session ratified treaties with France on arbitration and the 1905 sanitary accord. Bridges were authorized for Minnesota and Missouri near St Louis. In the house the Burnett Dillingham bill failed over the president's veto. A rules limit on the sundry civil bill aimed to avert a filibuster. Additional action included tax law amendment talk and probes into the Limoges china affair and a Rockefeller Foundation incorporation proposal.

The G A R and W R C plan a triple celebration on February 22 at Odd Fellow Hall starting 7 30 PM with living pictures and music honoring McKinley Lincoln and Washington. Mrs Herman S Bowman and daughter Mary of North College were in Bedford Monday. Mrs Harry Murray recently had an appendicitis operation at City Hospital and is now recovering at home.
