A Pine Island Florida message reports the death of Helen Cook eight year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs Ray Cook of Bloominton after a diphtheria attack. Helen died in Arcadia hospital after their winter visit. burial planned in Green Hill following arrival of the family with the remains.
Lucindia May Farris aged thirteen died Wednesday at Dunn Hospital from influenza complications. Burial followed Thursday at Scoggan Cemetery. The death marks the fifth in the Farris family in six weeks, with several relatives remaining in care at Dunn Hospital and with relatives. Mr and Mrs Frank Spaulding of Bloomington visited Mrs Spaulding’s parents through the week.
Senator James E. Watson told about 600 Kentucky Republicans at the Lincoln Protective Club banquet that government operation of railroads cost 380 million in the first year and 79 million in January alone. He warned government ownership leads to socialism and a massive payroll, risking a national financial panic amid eighteen billion dollars in railroad securities.
J Fred Kurfess an engineer for the Monon railroad between Louisville and Chicago died yesterday at his Orleans Indiana home aged 55 He moved from New Albany six months ago to work on the Orleans and French Lick branch He is survived by his widow two sons Ensign Fred Kurfess in the navy and Lieut Leland Kurfess in France and a daughter Mrs Mabel Winterrowd of Montreal Also a member of Central Christian Church New Albany and its board of trustees The body will be taken to New Albany for burial in Fairview cemetery
A grand Hawthorne Jubilee at the Elks Home drew many out of town guests and a large local attendance. The ball room featured red and white ribbons, flags, parasols, and a Japanese garden effect with an Indianapolis Orchestra. The evening included a grand march for 125 couples led by Thuswelda Furst and Lieut. Edward Sproul, plus four cotillions and elaborate costumes from numerous guests and performers.
