The Hirsch bill allowing gambling on races under the pari mutuel system was approved by the Indiana Senate 26 to 10. It is described as a favored measure for every county fair in the state with Lanz of Lawrence Orange and Martin voting for the bill. A separate report notes the British seizure of the American steamer Wilhelmina's cargo of provisions in London.
Indianapolis February 11 Senator Ballou charged Senator Zearing with aiming to discipline him for opposing Mayor Bell's bill creating a finance board. Ballou said Zearing vowed to reconsider Ballou's drainage bill to discipline him. Zearing did not respond and the motion failed with only Zearing voting in favor.
Frank Henderson a local colored man is on trial in Lawrence Nei Ninth court for larceny and receiving stolen goods in connection with missing hides from the Seig and Seig slaughter house east of the city dated January 1st. The jury was selected in the morning and witnesses for the state testified as the defense plans an alibi.
Stanley Covey of East Oolitic and Miss Pearl Smith of Guthrie wed Thursday at 10 by Justice of the Peace Malott at his office on the west side of the public square. The couple will reside in East Oolitic.
About forty ladies attended the Economics Club gathering at Mrs J H Underwood’s West 15th street home. Miss Georgia Findley spoke on milk digestion and digestive properties, with ice cream and coffee served. The next meeting is scheduled for February 7 at Mrs Herschel Moore’s home with study on fruit digestibility and storage, plus a clothing debate and summer wardrobe tips.
Miss Lelia Rowe entertained fifteen friends at home on West Sixteenth Street to honor Miss Eloise Millis of Hanover who arrived to teach Latin in the city Fish School after Miss Abbie Marble resigned. The afternoon featured spring flowers, a tea menu, vocal numbers by John Rowe Jr and Beryl Fosder, and readings by Marguerite Austin and Lelia Rowe.
The Bedford Concert Orchestra directed by Col Franklin will give a program at FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH Monday night February 15. The personnel includes concert-master POS, violins C W Pigg Grace Lariman Raymond Clunch Marguerite Hughes Illelia McMurphy F L Smith Hayden Owen Thomas Abel and others across viola cello basses flute clarinets saxophones cornets horns trombone drums bells piano with Miss Ottilia Scherschel.
Mrs Doyle Graham was honored with a surprise birthday party at her South H Street home on Wednesday evening. Relatives and friends attended a 7 30 gathering with pinochle, social amusements, and cake and ice cream. Guests included Mr and Mrs Sam Mitchell, Mr and Mrs Ralph Mitchell and Georgia, plus many neighbors and family members.
Frances Pierce of Mitchell was granted a divorce from Robert L. Pierce in the Lawrence circuit court Thursday. Mrs. Goldie Goodman of the Club house at Oolitic has gone to French Lick to be with her mother who is seriously ill. Mrs. Arthur Hall on North Street has been very ill from strychnine poisoning but is improving. Mrs. Emily Johnson of South Street remains about the same after several days of illness.
Stone City Club is organizing its annual banquet and dance set for Friday February 26 with plans underway. John Smith of Fayetteville visited the city on business Thursday and was noted in attendance.
John Stewart, found guilty of murder and given a life sentence by two jurors, will have his fate decided tomorrow by Judge Miers on whether to grant a new trial or begin serving the sentence. The Blooming ton Telephone reports the court postponed action until tomorrow morning. Attorneys Regis ter and Henley will be heard. Stewart has not spoken.
Mrs. Harvey Bonica, taken to the City Hospital with a severe appendicitis attack, submitted to a surgical operation Wednesday. Despite the seriousness of her condition, the case is being watched closely as relatives visit nearby. Ezra Hunter and family from Bloomington were seen en route to Norman Station to visit Mrs. Hunter’s parents.
A state section compiled tax notices shows French Lick with the highest rate at 4.96 dollars per hundred. Other towns with rates above 4 include Salem Mitchell Bloomington Paoli Bicknell and West Baden. Versailles records the lowest at 2.90 with many towns near 3.5 to 4.0.
The Seymour Republican reports nearly two thousand horses bought by European belligerents were shipped via the B and O Southwestern from Fort Worth to Newport News. Three trainloads totaling 80 cars left Fort Worth, passed through St. Louis, and faced quarantine at Cincinnati due to foot and mouth disease. Unloading occurred in the city for the 15 car first train, with rest of stock proceeding to Covington and beyond. five more trains are rumored for the week. Buyers have toured southern towns, paying high prices for horses and mules amid ongoing war preparations.
William C. Cowen an aged man died Thursday at 6 30 a m at the home of his brother in law James Kinser near Chapel Hill from a stroke of paralysis suffered days earlier. The body will be taken to Terre Haute Friday morning to the home of his daughter Mrs Jean Lisman for funeral arrangements to be announced.
