Walter Olds of Ft Wayne withdraws from the Republican primary for the U S Senate in favor of Harry S. New citing business reasons and criticizing the primary law as unfair to moderate earners. President Wilson’s marriage license was issued with Reverend Herbert Scott Smith to perform the ceremony at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.
A Wednesday night fire in Nashville, Tennessee destroyed most belongings. Ada Brown, sister of Mrs. Owen, saved a small amount of clothing while Mr and Mrs Phineas Carter, including Mrs Carter, saved only what they wore.
Funeral services for John B. Burrell who died Tuesday at his Brownstown home were conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian church. Rev. N. Willson of Princeton and Rev. A. F. Holgan of Browns town M. E. church led the service. Burial followed in Fairview cemetery. Burrell was well known locally.
Orville and Harry Halstead, youths from Huettsville, were located near Vallejo California after posters offered $65 for their capture. They are accused of beating Riley Williams near Bettsville to steal pension money. Williams was badly beaten and near death before the fugitives fled with Bob Owens hounds active in the chase.
Lt. Howard is named in a bond release petition filed in Lawrence Circuit Court. Prosecutor Marshall Woolery acts as representative and asks for relief from the bond obligations.
George Saul a tailor for Woop Bailey filed for divorce from Elsie Tierce Pierce in Lawrence circuit court alleging adultery at various times in their marriage begun February 17 1910 and separated June 27 1914. Custody of their child is sought and a name restoration is requested. A separate item notes a fall on icy pavement injuring Saul at the entrance to a tailor shop earlier in the day.
A statement from Harry S New announcing his candidacy for United States senator in Indiana. He seeks the Republican nomination at the March 7 primary after Hugh T Miller’s withdrawal, citing the need for a Republican Congress and tariff policies. He leans on a 25 year party service record with the Indianapolis Journal and pledges to campaign and seek strong party support.
Bud Long brother of William S. Long and former Bedford man died at his Knoxville Tennessee home after a lingering illness of Brights disease. He was born in 1860 near Knoxville and worked in the stone business before serving as day engineer for the city waterworks. He later led the Beaumont Waterworks for 21 years. He leaves a widow three grown children a brother and two sisters. Funeral and interment will be in Knoxville.
Police were summoned to a post office at 3 a.m. Thursday after burglars attempted to force an entry. The thieves' activity was interrupted when a frozen flag on the roof began thumping against the pole, masking their noise.
The D A A held a pleasant Wednesday afternoon gathering at Mrs Ethel McCracken's West Fourteenth Street home with hostesses Mrs Will Walls and Mrs L E Rainbolt assisting. A business session was followed by a social hour featuring sandwiches olives and tea. Visitor Mrs Mason of Miami Florida joined the event staying with her daughter Mrs E E Farmer.
The Domestic Science class No. 2 hosted a noon dinner in the sewing room of the high school building for faculty including Superintendent J. B. Fagan Principal E. W. Montgomery and department heads. Menu featured salmon croquettes Indian chutney peas pumpkin wafers and Persian sweets with Miss Carolyn Duncan coordinating serving.
A two day court of inquiry was held Wednesday and Thursday over petty misdemeanors north of the city. Proceedings focused on local minor offenses and related municipal concerns.
Authorities held a court of inquiry Thursday to investigate petty theft and misdemeanors troubling residents north of the city. Many witnesses testified as officials examined disturbances including a reported incident involving chickens valued at over two hundred dollars.
Ora F Cochran a Lafayette resident and Monon Railroad brakeman died instantly when a brake beam failed under car and he crawled beneath to repair it. The extra freight No 516 dragged him for yards near Wallace Junction 75 miles south of Lafayette. Conductor Faucett and crew were on duty. Cochran left a sick wife and two sons. He was a longtime railway worker and member of Pauls M E church and local railroad unions.
A smallpox case is reported in Seymour, victim Charley Wright son of Ed Wright. The boy broke out while blocking shoes in a hotel triggering vaccination among travelers. There is also a reported case in Scott County near the Jackson County line.
The funeral of the little months old daughter of Mr and Mrs W Smith on Breckenridge road was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o clock after the infant was found dead in its bed Wednesday morning when the mother went to rise it.
